My mind wanders back to twenty-four years ago when my two children started school – my daughter in first grade and my son in kindergarten. We had never really considered private education until our church started a Christian school. Desiring to be supportive of our church, we enrolled both children in the church school.
Being the first in our family to have children, we received opinions about child-rearing from many of our relatives who thought we were crazy for choosing a Christian school with an individualized curriculum.
“Why would you put your kids in such a school; won’t they miss out?”
“They will never make it in the real world. You are sheltering them too much.”
“Those uniforms make the kids look different!”
Their comments did not deter us because, as the years passed, we watched our children excel in their school. They learned to read, multiply, solve equations, and diagram sentences. The literature they studied was never offensive. Their achievement test scores were great! But we also saw more than academic growth. We noticed their sensitivity to God, love for others, and obedient hearts. Our children were involved in church activities and had memorized more Scripture than my husband and I could ever imagine!
When our finances were plenteous, we didn’t give our tuition bill a second thought. But as a financial depression hit our state, we had to evaluate carefully all of our financial obligations. But never once did we consider placing our children in the “free” public schools. What began as a “good idea” had grown into a Biblical conviction.
We believed “The Great Commandment” taught in Deuteronomy. We experienced the blessing of obeying God’s law by the character development we observed in our children. God always provided the funds for their tuition.
Many parents worry as the teen years approach, and we were no different. But the character-building curriculum, reinforced by our Bible-believing church, supported our values as parents. The teen years passed rather easily, and we were beginning to prepare for college!
We were so excited when both of our children were accepted into the colleges of their choice and earned bachelor degrees with honors. It has been so rewarding to watch them grow into spiritually healthy adults who have dedicated their lives to helping other people. Both are happily married to Christian spouses who share their Biblical convictions. But this is not the end of the story.
Now we are experiencing another great joy – our grandchildren! My son has a sweet toddler and a second baby scheduled to arrive any day. My daughter has a little boy who just made his grand entrance! As I hold this tiny new life, I thank God that over twenty years ago our pastor had the courage to open a Christian school and that God led us to enroll our children. Because of that school, our children received a Christian education. Today my grandchildren will reap the benefits of having parents who love them and who will train them to love and obey God.
You, too, have made the right choice. The investment in a Christian education returns far more dividends than a safe environment and strong academics. A Christian education builds young people with Godly character and loving hearts.
A grateful mom
